El Salvador

Although El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, it holds some of the world’s natural wonders. The tiny tropical island has some jaw-dropping landscapes, cloud forests, smoking volcanoes, and clear lagoons.

Tourists are known to enjoy the country’s pristine ecological reserve, El Imposible, where over 500 species of birds reside. Then there are the volcanic crater lakes of Coatepeque and Ilopango, where you can take a dip or do some sailing, fishing, and kayaking.

The Barra de Santiago beach also serves as a nature reserve for bird and butterfly species. Other places of interest are:

  • Guazapa volcano
  • Lempa, Paz and Guajoyo rivers
  • San Andres, Joya de Cerén and Tazumul, etc.

If you are one for festivities, the best time to visit would be 13-14 September for Fiesta de Santa Cruz de Roma, or 3 May for Las Palmas harvest procession, both of which are Panchimalco’s festivities.

Salvadorans are lovers of fresh fruits, so tourists are sure to get their fair share of bananas, mango, and pineapple while visiting. Besides fruits, some exceptional El Salvadore cuisine includes:

  • Pupusa – fried tortilla, filled with cheese or vegetables
  • Casamiento – rice and black beans
  • Gallo en chicha – soup made from rooster, corns, and cane sugar
  • Beverages – Refrescos (Natural fruit drinks), Tic tac and Torito (a strong alcoholic drink made from sugar cane), and Kolachampan (sugarcane flavored soft drink).
